The method we teach
What is Iyengar yoga?
Iyengar yoga is a precise, alignment-based approach developed by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar of Pune, India — and carried forward today by his family and a global community of devoted teachers and students.
What makes it different
Precision & alignment
Close attention to how the body is positioned in each pose builds strength and mobility safely, and protects joints and muscles from strain.
The use of props
Blocks, belts, bolsters, and ropes bring each pose within reach — so the practice adapts to your body, rather than the other way around.
Accessible to all
Because poses can be modified and supported, Iyengar yoga suits every age and ability — including those working with injury, stiffness, or limited mobility.
The eight limbs of yoga
The practice rests on the classical philosophy of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which describes yoga as having eight “limbs” — a path that runs from how we live in the world to the stillness of the mind:
- Yama — conduct toward others
- Niyama — conduct toward oneself
- Asana — the practice of postures
- Pranayama — breath control
- Pratyahara — turning the senses inward
- Dharana — concentration
- Dhyana — meditation
- Samadhi — self-realization
In class, we begin where everyone begins — with asana, the postures — and the rest unfolds naturally over time.
